Kinder Surprise Egg - dangerous?
Are the Kinder eggs dangerous?!
Today I was searching some interesting information about Kinder Surprise Eggs and I have found out that surprise eggs were banned in United States. My first thought was 'ridiculous!', however it has some undertow. There was a section in the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act saying that a confectionery product with a non-nutritive object, partially or totally embedded within it, cannot be sold within the US. There was potential fine of 2500$ for carrying the surprise egg across the US border. The ban meant to protect american children from swallowing the small toys inside the chocolate shells.
Luckily after years companies selling surprise eggs has found the way to sell them in America. The toys are being placed into into new design eggs. One of the company insert the toy in a plastic capsule with a thick ridge that separates the two hollow chocolate halves. For regulators, the ridge, which is visible when the foil covering the sweet comes off, serves the purpose of warning children that there is something hidden inside. As an additional precaution, the toys are also larger than the ones found inside the foreign versions.
Personally I think the government should regulate such things, however it must be done using common sense. There are loads of dangerous objects around us, but it doesn't mean we have to bun all of them. Every child has a parent/ guardian who should look after them and responsible for their well being and security. We cannot relay on some silly regulations.
There is a saying that everything is for people. But that everything must be used wisely.
I will not stop my son playing with them. Of course there is a hazard of choking with a tiny plastic object, but hazards are everywhere: sharp corners of the table, whole in a pavement, and etc. I have never been afraid of my son as I always treat him as a homo sapiens.. he has a brain so he has to learn how to use it:) I talk to him and I am making him aware of hazards. I am not only protecting him but also educate him what objects might be dangerous and why. Future will tell what kind of person he will be but so far so good! Love him to the bits.
